Report: Top DNC officials make six-figure salaries BOSTON - Top Democratic National Convention officials are making six-figure salaries, paid for with tax dollars, for just over a year of work, according to a published report. Convention chief executive Rod O'Connor is being paid $190,000 for 15 months of work, including four months after the four-day event in Boston ends, according to a draft budget obtained by the Boston Herald. Alice Huffman, chairwoman of the convention committee, will make $130,000 for 13 months of work, including one month after the end of the convention, according to the documents. The Democratic and Republican conventions will take in about $15 million from the voluntary $3 presidential campaign check off this election cycle, causing some to question the wisdom of using public money for convention salaries. "This is taxpayer dollars," said Larry Noble, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics. "You have to question how they are using the money." DNC communications director Stephanie Cutter, who is being paid $100,000, defended the salaries. "This is a multimillion dollar event and one of the most important events that takes place in this nation," she said. "The logistics of this event alone are extraordinary. We actually feel very lucky to have hired the caliber of people we did at these salaries." O'Connor is responsible for day-to-day convention operations and serves as DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe's eyes and ears in Boston. Huffman, who a year ago questioned Boston's bid for the convention, lives in California but plans to visit Boston regularly to check on progress. Her job comes with a $40,000 scheduler, an $80,000 travel budget and a $50,000 contingency fund. Many officials are already being paid even though the convention is still nine months away. Operations director Cameron Moody is being paid $115,000 to coordinate security and transportation details with city, state and federal agencies. Other top earners include Eileen Toback, being paid $103,000 as director of administration; Legal counsel Cindy Lott, making $100,000; and Lee Satterfield, director of convention planning, $135,000. The Democrats are paying themselves six-figure salaries at the same time they're "crying poverty when it come to funding conventions," Noble said. The Democrats are free to spend on convention salaries as they wish because the Boston 2004 host committee is lining up private donors to fund critical convention functions, said Common Cause Counsel Don Simon. "The fact that they can dip into this backdoor revenue stream allows this lack of fiscal discipline for the federal dollars," he said. Boston 2004 has promised to raise more than $50 million to pay for the nominating convention. © Copyright 2003 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
